penso que esse conceito de habitação mínima é um ponto de partida, quando começamos a pensar na habitação, mas nunca é um fim. A situação económico-social actual leva-nos a (re)pensar o espaço habitacional, mas esta situção é apenas passageira, portanto, não podemos pensar um espaço habitacional para o "hoje", mas sim para o "amanhã", por isso, o "espaço mínimo", que é o "hoje", não pode ser visto como o objectivo, mas sim o ínicio para o espaço do "amanhã". Agora esse espaço do "amanhã", o que será? Para mim, será um regresso ao género das habitações das zonas históricas, não na sua forma, mas sim no seu conteúdo. A nivel urbano, iremos regressar às cidades desenhadas para o homem, e não para o carro, iremos construir edifícios proporcionais ao homem, para que ele possa interagir com a rua e nada de arranha-céus, ruas cheias de carros, etc... A nivel do espaço arquitectónico, iremos regressar ao espaço bem definido, numa escala humana, de fácil leitura e nada de openspace, espaços ambíguos, etc... isto é apenas a minha opinião...

Florida’s next big community isn’t for retirees — it’s for solar energy buffs. Florida Power & Light and development firm Kitson & Partners are collaborating on Babcock Ranch, a 17,000 acre solar-powered city near Fort Myers. The community will run entirely on a 75 megawatt, $300 million solar-powered generator, and will also use smart grid technology to let all inhabitants of the community monitor their power consumption. According to the Babcock Ranch website, “Electric vehicles, able to plug in for recharge at convenient community-wide recharging stations, will glide along avenues beneath the glow of solar-powered street lamps. Ingenious, revolutionary Smart Grid technologies will monitor and manage energy use while Smart Home technology will allow residents to operate their homes at maximum efficiency, thereby reducing energy costs.” If all goes according to plan, construction on Babcock Ranch’s solar facility will begin later this year and construction of the city center will commence next year. All homes and businesses in the city will be certified according to Florida Green Building Council standards. The community will ultimately contain 19,500 homes and 6 million square feet of retail and light industrial space, but Babcock Ranch won’t just have ample room for homes and businesses - the community will also have over 8,000 acres reserved for greenways and open space. The biggest hurdle for Babcock Ranch will be convincing people to set up shop in a brand-new, unestablished city, even if that community promises 20,000 permanent jobs. What do you think — would you move to this solar-powered city? One of the world's biggest photovoltaic projects is planned for southwest Florida. Florida Power & Light will spend $350 million to build a 75-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant at a planned city, Babcock Ranch, near Fort Myers, the company announced Thursday. Construction could begin late this year, subject to state regulatory approvals. Eric Silagy, the ultility's chief development officer, said at a press conference that the company's photovoltaic project is larger than any previously announced. "We are extremely excited to be building one of the world's largest solar photovoltaic projects, once the state legislative and regulatory authorities have taken the necessary actions for us to move forward," said Silagy. A 60MW photovoltaic solar plant in Spain has been in operation since 2008, according to PV Resources. But the Babcock Ranch plant could be the largest if it reaches 75MW output--before somebody else does. Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity. The developers, Kitson & Partners, hope that Babcock Ranch will be the world's first city to get all its energy from renewable solar energy. "The FPL solar plant will be inside Babcock Ranch. Along with solar panels on the roofs of buildings citywide, it will be a revolutionary leap forward in clean energy for an urban area," said Syd Kitson, CEO of Kitson & Partners, in a statement. The Sierra Club's national clean-energy representative and the World Wildlife Fund support the project and hope that it will influence other U.S. cities. Babcock Ranch will be wireless-enabled using an ultrahigh-capacity "digital pipeline" that will support the use of current and emerging technologies, plus clean-tech efforts, according to press materials. The city of Babcock Ranch will include 6 million square feet of retail, commercial, office, civic, and light industrial space. The entire project is expected to cost $2 billion. Burnham Pavilion by Zaha Hadid Architects April 16th, 2009 Here (at last!) are a couple of images of Zaha Hadid’s design for a temporary pavilion in Millennium Park, Chicago. The pavilion, along with another designed by UNStudio, will celebrate the centenary of 1909 Plan of Chicago (also known as the Burnham Plan) and will be open to the public from 19 June to 31 October. Here’s some info from the architects: – Burnham Pavilion Zaha Hadid Architects Zaha Hadid Architects participation in the Burnham Plan Centennial celebrations is a great opportunity to participate in Chicago’s ongoing tradition of bold plans and big dreams with an architectural design at the scale of a pavilion. Our design will echo Chicago’s cutting edge cultural and architectural landscape by introducing a new Zaha Hadid Pavilion Concept into Millenium Park. Working within the larger framework of the Centennial celebrations’ commitment to deliberate the future of cities, our intervention will create a new public destination in the City of Chicago. The structure will trigger the visitor’s intellectual curiosity whilst an intensification of public life around and within the pavilion supports the idea of public discourse. New formal concepts will meet the memory of bold historic urban planning. Superimpositions of spatial structures with hidden traces of Burnham’s organizational systems and architectural representations create unexpected results. By using methods of overlaying, complexity is build up and inscribed in the structure. A House by FKL Architects April 17th, 2009 Dublin architects FLK have completed a residence called A House in Dublin, Ireland. The building comprises two stacked, diagonally-staggered, concrete volumes. “The house is an exploration of diagonal space within an orthogonal form and the possibilities of integrating environmental concerns at a fundamental level,” says Diarmaid Brophy of FLK. “A concrete tube provides the structural and spatial organisation and encloses the public areas of the house,” Brophy continues. “Divided by joinery elements, the tube of space is twisted between ground and first floor to allow a relationship to the garden and daylight from above.” Interior surfaces are made of sandblasted concrete and timber. A-house This house, a home for a family of five is an exploration of the possibilities of integrating environmental concerns at a fundamental level within a contemporary idiom. The site was chosen for its proximity to schools, local shops, recycling facilities and work, allowing a daily life independent of the car or public transport. Located on a mews lane in Rathmines it is sufficiently large to support a family over a lifetime. The former back garden of a two storey over garden level Victorian terraced house, it is accessed from a lane to the south with the garden to the north. Concerns of establishing a relationship with the garden and maximising daylight penetration in a North facing building where East & West facades are blank, dictated the organisation of family rooms at ground and first floor connected by a narrow void. This layout is expressed architecturally as a “slipped tube” of space, coded materially in sandblasted concrete, stratified from front to rear, divided programmatically with joinery boxes. A strong visual and spatial connection is established between the kitchen/dining room at ground level and the study on the first floor capitalising on day lighting and glimpsed views. This move creates diagonal visual relationships that extend spatial awareness to the limits of the depth, breadth and length of the house. Arranged around this conceptually manipulated tube, are the less public rooms: garage, utility room and WC at ground level and children’s bedrooms and bathroom at first floor. A transverse shift in section, across the plan pushes the children’s bedrooms up by 300mm to allow daylight from the Study on the west at first floor to pass through to the dining room and kitchen to the east at ground floor. This shift gives additional height to study and kitchen and more modest scale for private areas without increasing the overall scale of the building. A set back at first floor to the rear maintains separation from the houses to the rear and increases the amount of daylight to the garden. The layout allows for an independent or guest bedroom suite at ground level and gives flexibility to accommodate change in family circumstances. The modest garden will provide space to grow vegetables and fruit while the roofs are covered in sedum to replace the building footprint. The exterior in common with its neighbours is restrained, choosing a formal expression of the relationships between internal spaces and elevation. Windows are floor to ceiling drawing on the Georgian tradition, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the plan. Set within a tight urban context of protected structures, the relationship with external spaces is not founded on an expectation of privacy externally but on diagonal relationships that extend the perspective to distant views and provided a backdrop to the internal activity. The concrete exposed internally is sandblasted to accentuate the liquid nature of the material and to record the process of construction. The front and rear elevations are vented rain screen facades clad with TRESPA from William Cox, a wood based cladding panel chosen for it’s environmental credentials. These facades are supported on independent laminated timber framing -from sustainable managed sources- with all opening sections clad with TRESPA and lined with TriIso multifoil insulation to maintain the u-value of the façade. The Ironmongery from ADA is manufactured by Olivari from Bio Chrome an environmentally aware stainless steel. A negotiated tendering process allowed a constructive dialogue between the design team and a committed and proactive contractor which translated into viable and cost effective materials and detailing incorporating environmental concerns from design through to construction. – Photographs by Verena Hilgenfeld. Sophia bookshop and publishing house by Nicos Kalogirou and Evangelos Kotsioris April 8th, 2009 Architect Nicos Kalogirou and student Evangelos Kotsioris have completed the interior of a book store and publishing house in Thessaloniki, Greece. Glass panels arranged in a spiral create the shop windows and display space. Lighting is provided through an angled, translucent glass structure hanging from the ceiling and the back-lit shelving that frames the shop counters. Other materials include steel, silver-lacquered laminated wood panels, clear Plexiglass and grey flooring. The interior was completed in 2008. The following text is from Nicos Kalogirou: – Bookshop/publishing house ‘sophia’ Thessaloniki, Greece The transformation of a former pesticide warehouse into an inviting, ‘transparent’ bookshop and a small publishing house gave the chance to experiment with multiple glass layers, triangulated surfaces, distorted geometries and non-standard construction methods in a manageable scale. Two vertically folded, spiraling, glass trapezoids form the labyrinth-like shop windows and a recessed entrance. Clear volumes of ever-increasing height towards the interior of the spirals serve as display surfaces on multiple levels. The multiplicity of the glass layers generates unexpected idols and multiple reflections that change dramatically according to natural and artificial lighting conditions. The angular, winding forms of the two service stalls result from the distortion of an initially rectangular, 15m. long, linear piece (as requested by the client). Their geometry is complimented by the sphenoid forms of a custom-made, back-lit trapezoid shelf system that stands behind them. Stalls and shelves direct visually to the inner part of the elongated plan. A triangulated back-lit ‘cloud’ surface hanging from the double-height void acts as a lighting body. The angled steel and glass staircase leads to an interior balcony with an office (overlooking directly the entrance below) and a small conference room. To maximize construction time, singular pieces were cut by CNC (computer numeric control) machines while the seemingly singular elements of the shelf system are actually the result of an irregular placing of 3 shelf units that create single and double height shelf surfaces. Additionally, all internal vertical support elements of the stalls are broken down to only 2 repeated pieces. Above: stalls The biggest part of the low budget was used in favor of the clear and translucent safety glass while for the rest of the elements the following rough materials with minimum treatment were chosen; uncolored protected steel, rough silver lacquered laminated wooden panels, clear Plexiglas and reflective heavy-duty industrial flooring in light gray.
