A restricted competition for a new museum in the middle of one of the most iconic places in Rio de Janeiro, the Avenida Atlantica at Copacabana, has just been awarded. The building will host the Museu da Imagen e de Som (Image and Audio Museum), that as of now is desegregated through the city in separate offices. The new building will host in one place facilities for the conservation and study of the brazilian visual heritage, along with a state-of-art museum. The competition included the local practice Bernardes & Jacobsen, that has been previously featured on ArchDaily, along with Sao Paulo´s Isay Weinfeld (see his previous works featured on AD), Brasil Arquitetura and Tacoa Arquitetos. On the international side we have the regulars Daniel Libeskind and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, along with the japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Just when I was writing this post, I found that the competition was awarded to Diller Scofidio + Renfro, at a ceremony held today. I´ve heard a lot of buzz about this competition in Twitter and Facebook from our brazilian readers, it seems to be generating a lot of debate as of now. And it´s very obvious, as the building will be erected on a very iconic avenue, at a close distance from Museum of Modern Art by Affonse Eduardo Reidy and the Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum by Brazilian master Oscar Niemeyer. Not much to say about the winning entry by DS+R, it´s just another project along their line. But it´s not just the jury who voted unanimously for their project, they also won a reader´s poll at the main Brazilian news site O Globo. And Libeskind… seriously? My vote goes to Isay Weinfeld. testi, disegni e immagini di / text, drawing and image by Iodice Architetti Concorso internazionale di progettazione - Primo premio l disegno del padiglione è una pianta quadrata di 3.600 mq per una altezza di 18 metri, divisa all'interno in più corpi di dimensioni diverse e irregolari, collegati da strutture-ponte in acciaio che lasciano intravedere i ballatoi di collegamento. Il progetto soddisfa sul piano strutturale l'esigenza di essere eventualmente smontato e ricostruito in dimensione ridotta in un'altra area della città. I moduli costruttivi che compongono l'edificio costituiscono un insieme coeso geometricamente, simbolo della pluralità di tradizioni e costumi regionali italiani che contribuiscono a definire l'indentità nazionale comune: una sorta di mosaico le cui differenti tessere mostrano immagini unitarie. La forma illustrata anche la complessità topografica delle città italiane con il loro succedersi di vie strette, corti e vicoli che si dilatano all'improvviso negli spazi aperti delle piazze, analogamente a quanto si riscontra nei nuclei urbani cinesi tradizionali. Il giardino interno, la presenza dell'acqua e la luce naturale che si propaga negli ambienti dai patii e dai tagli laterali delle pareti creano un effetto di comfort psicofisico, importante per la qualità degli spazi dedicati alla vita di relazione. L'edificio è lambito su tre lati da una lama d'acqua che lo riflette esaltandone gli effetti luminosi naturali. La luminosità della struttura si riproduce anche all'interno non solo attraverso feritoie che evocano i vicoli stretti tra i palazzi delle città, ma anche graziw all'impiego di cemento trasparente, un materiale poliedrico di recente creazione. Tale prodotto, a seconda della sua particolare e diversa composizione in relazione ai diversi affacci del fabbricato, genera un duplice effetto architettonico: una percezione notturna dall'esterno della vivacità delle azioni contenute all'interno e una presenza dell'atmosfera esterna, durante il giorno, percepibile all'interno. La superficie del padiglione apparirà in parte diafana e in parte trasparente con facciate con facciate formate da cristalli autopulenti. Il Padiglione è pensato come una "macchina" dal particolare funzionamento bioclimatico con l'obbiettivo di un significativo risparmio energetico. Gli elementi fotovoltaici integrati nei vetri delle coperture esterne garantiranno un effetto schermante dalle radiazioni, mentre il progetto illuminotecnico dell'edificio mira non soltanto a scandire gli spazi, ma anche a favorire il risparmio di energia. retirado de http://box.plotcad.it

UNStudio’s design has won a competition to build a 21,000 square meter dance theatre in the historic centre of St. Petersburg, Russia. The new complex houses the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, headed by choreographer Boris Eifman. From the four projects presented (Jean Nouvel, UNStudio, Snøhetta & Zao), UNStudio’s design was yesterday unanimously chosen by the jury for realisation. Seen at designboom. The dance palace forms an integrated part of the european embankment city quarter masterplan for a new urban square in the historic centre of St. Petersburg. The urban context of the building is essential to the design. The dance palace is positioned on the square in such a way as to allow for unrestricted visibility towards the nearby Prince Vladimir and Peter and Paul cathedrals, thereby framing some of the most exceptional buildings in St. Petersburg. The sculptural qualities of the dance palace reflect those of the surrounding buildings in the masterplan, providing a connection to its surroundings yet still retaining saliency. A central main entrance is incorporated into the façade design in order to fully integrate the building into this lively public square. UNStudio’s design for the dance palace presents an open and inviting theatre building with provision for 1300 guests (large auditorium 1000, small auditorium 300). Programmatic considerations focus on the spacious circulation of the public foyer and the transparent relationship to the surrounding public square and the city. Integration with the existing neighbouring buildings is achieved by both the scale of the building - which in elevation follows and respects St. Petersburg’s typical 28m roofline and the transformative transparency which is introduced by a facade system of triangular cladding panels. The variation between opaque and perforated panels creates a controlled openness, depending on programme, views and orientation. ‘The vertical foyer provides a high level of transparency from inside to outside, whilst also presenting a kind of stage for visitors to the theatre; a place to see and be seen. the open arrangement and balcony structure in the foyer provides plateaus for its own choreography of both intimacy and exposure. Essential to UNStudio’s design for the main auditorium in the new dance theatre are both the acoustic considerations and the proximity of the audience to the stage. For this reason the horseshoe form was chosen. This form is considered to be one of the most successful forms acoustically in ballet and musical theatre for both performer and audience, whilst the proximity it affords to the stage ensures an intimate and collective experience for the spectator. A mandatory requirement when we were designing the auditorium was to make it possible to see the dancer’s feet from every seat in the hall at all times, no matter where the performer was positioned on the stage. retirado de archdaily.com
