Chapel of St. Loup, Pompaples - Switzerland (2008).

Grimshaw Architects Davis Brody Bond Aedas EMPAC Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY A center for artists, scientists, and engineers to come together to pursue discovery at the nexus of the real and virtual worlds. President Shirley Ann Jackson Photo: Chuck Choi The new Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) is located on the edge of the Rensselaer campus overlooking the city of Troy. EMPAC is a platform for performance and research incorporating four distinct and specialized venues under one roof: an acoustically optimized 1,200 seat Concert Hall, a 400 seat Theater, and two black box studios created for flexible use by artists and researchers. Also provided are artist-in-residence studios, audiovisual production and post production suites, audience amenities, and student and support facilities. So that the traditional and the experimental may be seen as yoked together yet distinct, Grimshaw arranged the concert hall and atrium axially with the main entrance in a linear sequence on the north side of the building, while the studios and theater form an adjacent sequence on the south. Photo: Chuck Choi Photo: Chuck Choi Photo: Chuck Choi A conceptual dialogue was then initiated between these two sequences by seeing the Concert Hall manifested as the physical presence of an object in space, while the Theater and studios represent the physical absence of discovered voids within a solid. Because the main entrance is at hilltop level, close to the roof, while the volume of the Concert Hall is fitted into the slope below, a large “found space” opens up between the two. Upon entering the building, visitors find themselves at the top of the Atrium and main circulation area, looking down at the exterior of the concert hall: a curved hull wrapped in solid cedar planks. Photo: Kristen Richards Photo: Chuck Choi Photo: Chuck Choi Access to the Concert Hall is provided via elevated walkways that span the atrium like gangplanks. The entire hull of the Concert Hall is contained within the Atrium, allowing public circulation all around it. Photo: Kristen Richards This use of the topography also creates vistas over Troy toward the Hudson River, as seen from the campus approach and from major visitor spaces within the building. The entire north facade of the building is a glass curtain wall, providing transparency between the EMPAC interior and the city of Troy. The glass wall allows daylight to flood the atrium, augmented by a halo skylight around the top of the concert hall that washes the cedar hull with the changing light of the day. By night, the wood hull is lit up from within the building and creates an iconic external identity that can be seen from distance. The curtain wall features mullions that carry heated water to insulate the space from the Northern New York winter. Photo: Chuck Choi Designed to be a first-class venue for symphonic music, yet equally capable of accommodating jazz, amplified music, presentations, film, and dance with electronically generated sound and video projection, the Concert Hall is configured traditionally in a “shoe box” format: as a long, narrow room of wood and masonry construction. The floor and lower walls are all finished in maple, while the upper walls are clad in a combination of precast acoustic panels made of gypsum and precast stone. The room is slightly convex in form to maximize acoustic diffusion. Photo: Chuck Choi The ceiling is made of panels of fabric less than one millimeter thick, supported on a delicate web of stainless steel cables. The fabric was specially selected and woven for EMPAC and is optimized for gentle reflectivity to high-frequency sound and increasing transparency to mid- and low-frequency sound, providing acoustic support to the musicians and audience while allowing the volume above the ceiling to generate reverberance. The ceiling panels form a convex shape overall and exhibit a gently glowing surface when illuminated. Photo: Kristen Richards The Theater is equipped to the highest standards available to professional theater companies and offers an extraordinary resource for Rensselaer’s experimental artists and student performers. The Theater can be used with or without its orchestra pit. Movable seating at the parterre level, along the sides, allows artists to configure the theater as a proscenium space or to extend the playing area along the sides of the audience. The framing of the side galleries accommodates the attachment of projection screens and loudspeakers, allowing the audience to be immersed in virtual environments. Finished with maple floors and high-quality plaster walls, the theater has a slightly less formal treatment than the concert hall, so that its architectural presence can recede when the stage lights come up. Photo: Kristen Richards Studio 1 is a true “black box” venue with minimal architectural finish, well suited for audio and music but optimized for scientific visualization, multi-screen and immersive performances, and dance. The walls are composed of adjustable acoustic wall diffusion panels and are also painted matte black. Photo: Kristen Richards Studio 2 is a smaller sibling of Studio 1, and while being well suited for dance and visual presentations, it is optimized for music recitals and recording and therefore has a “lights on” architectural character rather than being a black box. Studio 2 is finished with a resilient maple floor and ivory colored adjustable acoustic wall diffusion panels. Photo: Kristen Richards From an engineering and technological standpoint, EMPAC is state-of-the-art. Each of the contiguous spaces is built in acoustic isolation from one another. The HVAC system, virtually silent to preserve the integrity of performances and research, uses displacement ventilation to push air through registers under the seats. The massive 20,000-square-foot glass curtain wall features mullions that carry heated water to insulate the space from the Northern New York winter. This is the first time that this technology has been adopted in the United States. Linked to the university’s powerful supercomputer (the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations, CCNI), which will enable complex modeling and visualization, EMPAC will be a platform for the Rensselaer campus, its academic partners, and visiting artists from around the globe to experiment in critical fields. The design team is submitting the project for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and seeking a Silver rating. Madrid, Spain | Prado Museum Extention | Rafael Moneo

Rafael Moneo Prado Museum Extention Madrid, Spain Photo: Thomas Mayer The new site for the extension of the Prado Museum included the Jéronimos Cloister, its surrounding perimeter, and the area between the back of the Museum and the Ruiz de Alarcón Street. The extension is a new chapter in the Prao’s long life. To make room for the extention Moneo excavated the area between the Prado and the Cloister placing the new entrance hall, and the temporary exhibition galleries, below the restored Cloister. The roof of the new entrance hall is hidden beneath an box-hedged garden. Photo: Thomas Mayer The only decorative element on the otherwise simple, plain facade of brick, glass and stone, with its two story portico of fluted pillars, is a set of massive bronze doors by the artist Cristina Iglesias. Photo: Thomas Mayer Photo: Thomas Mayer The special attention given to the precision of the brick walls that emphasize the edges can be seen in the corner next to the church where the volume has undergone a careful process of erosion that reveals the concrete structure and the arches of the Cloister. Photo: Thomas Mayer Photo: Thomas Mayer The extension maintains the longitudinal nature of the old building and establishes a transverse axis from the reopened Velázquez gate to the Cloister. The Velázquez entrance connects to the new apse shaped entrance hall that serves as an intersection where the existing Prado Museum and the recently built extension overlap. This hall, with its Pompeian red stucco walls, embellished with the Muses excavated from the Villa Adriana, is the heart of the museum. Photo: Thomas Mayer Glazed passages embrace the open court surrounding the apse and lead to the trapezoidal space of the main foyer in which one of the longer sides coincides with the back of the Museum and the other with the alignment of the Ruiz de Alarcón Street. Photo: Thomas Mayer Photo: Thomas Mayer The main foyer, a generous open space cut into the slope, contains ticket sales, checkrooms, restrooms, information, as well as the cafeteria/restaurant, bookshop and museum store. From here you reach the new galleries for temporary exhibitions. Photo: Thomas Mayer Photo: Thomas Mayer The geometry and the perimeter of the Cloister determined the guidelines for the plan of the new building and the dimensions of the two below ground galleries. A light well/lantern cut through the Cloister’s floor brings light down to the galleries below. Photo: Thomas Mayer Photo: Thomas Mayer The Cloister can be understood as a lantern that illuminates the new building, as a work of art that has been incorporated in the Museum’s collections and as an architectural element that gives meaning to all that is built around it. The Cloisters receives daylight through a new skylight. Photo: Thomas Mayer Photo: Thomas Mayer The Cloister is all of these things at once, but it is also a reference to the past, a testimony to what was being built in the times of Philip IV, patron of Velázquez. Frank Gehry Gehry Partners, LLP Sønderborg Harbor Masterplan Sønderborg, Denmark Last week Frank Gehry presented his first Masterplan in Northern Europe to the city of Sønderborg. Photo: arcspace Photo: Claus Thorsted Photo: arcspace Frank Gehry, Peter M. Clausen, Chairman of the Board, and Jan Prokopek Jensen, Mayor of Sonderborg. The Sønderborg Harbor Masterplan proposes to transform the former industrial waterfront into a vibrant urban development by creating a sense of density and activity, focused around an Urban Square. The development extends along the waterfront and incorporates landscape parks, mixed-use areas, residential and office buildings, a hotel, recreation facilities, and cultural buildings. Photo: FOGA The focal point of the revitalized urban waterfront is the four buildings at the corners of the Urban Square. The Kunsthalle and Cinema are located on the city side of the Urban Square to carry the activity that connects the Urban Square with the historic city. The Hotel and the office building are located at the water side of the Urban Square to mediate between the smaller-scale historic buildings of Sonderborg and the larger-scale hospital and university complexes. Photo: FOGA By concentrating the new development around the Urban Square, it allows for a lower-density distribution of the office and residential buildings. This approach maximizes open space for culture and recreation and allows the continuation of the existing landscape as an Urban Park along the waterfront. Photo: FOGA Photo: FOGA Photo: FOGA The development is unified by a series of unique landscape spaces, creating a series of Urban Parks. These parks are linked by the Harborfront Promenade which extends the north end as a pedestrian bridge, completing the waterfront promenade and connecting both sides of the harbor. Photo: FOGA When Gehry Partners approached the project in 2006 they immediately produced several schemes for the site that reflected the multiple ways to address the urban and architectural challenges. Through a series of work sessions in Denmark and in Los Angeles the project team distilled the various participants ideas and needs into the final Masterplan. Photo courtesy Sønderborg Harbor Company Photo: arcspace Photo: FOGA Photo: FOGA Photo: FOGA Photo: FOGA Design Partner Edwin Chan Photo: FOGA The schemes were presented in the form of physical models, 3d computer models, and diagrams. The multiple options shown provoked discussions to assist the Harbor Company with refining their needs and goals. Gehry Partners also worked closely with Landscape Architect Melinda Taylor to establish an integrated urban and landscape vocabulary that is at once ecological, functional, and animated, and is conceived to meet the outdoor and recreational needs of Sønderborg's current and future inhabitants. Emerald Plaza by Emergent Architecture by Olivia Chen Public space is essential in any urban environment, but drawing people out can be difficult when the weather makes the outdoors uncomfortable. The Emerald Plaza in Abu Dhabi by Los Angeles-based Emergent Architecture is intended to invite people out of doors despite high temperatures by offering shade and a wide expanse of space. The multi-level, modern plaza physically links the buildings surrounding it via walkways, while cooling pools help to regulate the plaza’s temperature. Emerald Plaza’s ground-level environment acts much like a grotto, maintaining a comfortable temperature with water regulated and cooled by geothermal heat pumps. Above it, a sculptural volume is crafted from the surrounding angular geometries. This space will be used as an indoors conference and media center that overlooks the water. The pools will be filled with solar-powered lily pads and flowers to create an attractive public space for the nighttime hours, when lower temperatures will make both the lower and upper terraces more inviting. + Emergent Architecture Via World Architecture News Photos courtesy of Emergent Architecture

Madrid, Espanha | Habitação em Carabanchel | dosmasuno arquitectos
Márcio Ferreira replied to Dreamer's topic in Arquitectura

Villa 1 by Powerhouse Company October 17th, 2008 Villa 1, a woodland house in the Veluwe Zoom area near Arnhem in the Netherlands designed by architects Powerhouse Company, has been nominated for the Dutch Design Awards, which will be announced this weekend. Beneath the glazed top floor is a sub-terranean living space in the basement. The project has been nominated for the AM NAi prize 2008 and the ´best private interior´category of the Dutch Design Awards. The following information is from Powerhouse Company: – Powerhouse Company’s Villa 1 nominated for two design awards Villa 1 of the Powerhouse Company has received nominations for two important Dutch Design awards; the AM NAi prize 2008 and the Dutch Design Award 2008. Villa 1 was Powerhouse Company’s first commission after its foundation in 2005. The villa was completed at the beginning of this year. Powerhouse Company also designed the garden, the interior and a couple of furniture pieces. Set in the woodlands of Holland, the program of Villa 1 is oriented optimal towards the views on the terrain and the sun. Half of the program is pushed below ground to meet local zoning regulations. This creates a clear dichotomy in the spatial experience of the house - a glass box ground floor where all mass is concentrated in furniture elements and a ‘medieval’ basement, where the spaces are carved out of the mass. AM NAi prize 2008 The AM NAi price is rewarded biannually for the best building of a young dutch architect, by a jury under the direction of Ole Bouman (director of the NAi). The prize is an initiative of the Dutch Architectural Institute in Rotterdam ( NAi) and developing enterprise AM. The villa was selected, together with three other designs, from a total of 76 submissions. On the website the jury praises the design as “exquisitely expressive without becoming ruthless” and “conceptually and scenic a convincing design”. The winner of the money prize of 10.000 Euro will be announced on the 8th of November 2008. The event also includes the presentation of the book “Facts & Forms” from NAi publishers, which elaborately covers all the nominated buildings. Dutch Design Award The interior of Villa 1 is additionally nominated for the category ´best private interior´ of the Dutch Design Award. The villa is said to “ruthlessly position itself within the tradition of modern (interior) architecture”. The award will be granted on the 18th of October 2008, during the Dutch Design Week, in Eindhoven. The Powerhouse company was founded in 2005 by architects Charles Bessard (1976, France) and Nanne de Ru (1976, The Netherlands). The office is specialized in architecture, urban design and urban research and has completed projects in The Netherlands, Denmark, France, Russia and Thailand. It is based in Rotterdam and Copenhagen. – Posted by Rose Etherington Fonte: http://www.dezeen.com/2008/10/17/villa-1-by-powerhouse-company/

especiales > Garden and Sea, casa de fin de semana, Japón / Takao Shiotsuka Atelier [20/10/08] http-~~-//www.noticiasarquitectura.info/especiales/garden-and-sea/0.jpg Japan: Garden and Sea, weekend house - Takao Shiotsuka Atelier The site faces the sea and has deep depth. And it inclines toward the sea by the vertical interval like 2M. We arranged the house in the center of the site. The plane shape of the house is wedge to spread towards the sea. We planned the first floor as a place to enjoy a garden. The part facing the garden of the half underground is a glass window. By it, a slope of the ground just appears as form of the openings. The exterior floor covered with the white gravel. Since it is surrounded by the outside wall, outside can also be felt like the interior of a room. By place to stay and movement at that time, relations with a person and the ground surface change. The second floor enabled it to set up a sense of distance with the sea variously in the inside of a building. The both ends of cylindrical space long in the direction of marine are glass windows. An indoor partition wall is also glass. We can look at sea side and the location of the other side at the same time from the room. Even if the sojourner is in any place, he can see or feel the sea. The first floor that enjoys the yard, the second floor that enjoys the sea, and 2 space were divided clearly. Owner enabled it to spend the time of non-every day by going back and forth mutual space with the different feature appropriate for the cottage. O Arq.
