Continued Urban Vitality

"Our goal is to give the inner city an injection of contemporary elegance. A state of the art building with high quality work spaces would strengthen the multifunctional character and urban vitality of Budapest’s city centre. We perceive the need to balance divers’ requirements: Keeping the importance of the cultural heritage in mind the issue is to reconcile the functional, economic and historic preservation needs of the city centre."

"We feel that aesthetic and atmospheric rejuvenation is always an essential part of preservation - preserving the vitality of a historic city centre. One can perceive distinguished architectural periods in the development of Budapest’s inner city fabric. Szervita Square itself is an interesting example with high quality architecture from different periods being gathered around the square. We have an important opportunity now to continue this series with another signifi cant piece of architecture that can represent the architectural thinking of our time."

"The historic city must maintain its function not only as a cultural centre, retail centre and provider of tourist destinations, but equally as a central business location that provides top value work and business communication spaces. The continued importance as a business hub is dependent upon, the provision of appropriate space for expansion purposes. State of the art spaces should be provided within the city centre to prevent the rush to the outskirts. Such space provision can not easily be achieved in historic buildings. The historic substance might therefore be supplemented with carefully inserted new elements. European city centers run the risk of loose their function as an economic center if the provision of attractive central space is not succeeding. Here at Szervita we have a nice possibility to bring innovative business into the centre of the city, contributing to the vitality of the centre and of Szervita Square in particular. Our proposal is intended to contribute the city’s ambition to stay at the heart of innovative economic life."

"Conservation and the care of the historical squares and piazzas are an important contribution to the image and life of the city. Their proposal provides an underground car park in order to reduce parking spaces on the surface of the square. The square can thus be fully utilized as public relaxation space, aesthetically enhanced by the new building and animated by the provision of retail, a café etc."

"Apart from shops in the basement level, we suggest to have leisure areas as a restaurant and nightclub or a gym as a complement to the offi ces in the upper fl oors. As a means of increasing leisure activities those will serve not only the users of the building but also the neighborhood. It will increase the fl uctuation in circulation so that a high level of activity in the lower fl oors can be guaranteed outside the normal working or shopping hours. A stunning bar that takes advantage of the astonishing view over the city at the top of the building will help to keep the area busy at night."

Landmark Building – Iconic Piazza

"The whole ensemble is composed of two components merging into one unity: The building and the Square. The Building itself embraces the square and at the same time constitutes its vertical frame. Vice versa the piazza as the horizontal element in front of it complements the building as by providing an outdoor space to the functions of the interior."

"The buildings height is lower close to the low rising baroque building on its north and rising higher towards the other side of the square opposite to the tower of the baroque Szervita church, hence communicating with its surrounding and incorporating the existing urban forces into its form. The fl uid shape bends around the square and provides different views from all sides - an ever changing silhouette. From the south-west we perceive it as a very slim body and from the south and north views we see the form dramatically rising up. The facade of the building melts into the skin of the square. The square itself is a dish, an urban sink that provides different qualities of atmosphere as well as distinct public areas. In its continuous movement the skin of the composition becomes fi rst a façade that fades into the piazza and fi nally sweeps up at the end to become a canopy that will provide not only sun shading but an intimate area protected from the noise of the inner city. The components of the building are layered on top of each other, but generated from the same dramatic principle and therefore correspond to one another structurally, aesthetically and formally: core, structure, skin and brise soleil. The result is a composition that serves as a single iconic figure."

"As an additional unique feature we added the brise soleil to the façade. It is not only aesthetic but also a functional purpose to serve as sun shading and guarantees for a comfortable climate in the offi ce spaces above… The form of the brise soleil is projected to the piazza where it becomes urban furniture, either as pads that can be used to rest on or the pits that can be used as an outdoor space for the restaurant/café and some of them even become skylights to provide daylight for areas underneath. In their arrangement this urban furniture produces a soft urban landscape. The brise soleil is partially subdivided into smaller elements; their depth is defi ned by the angle of the sun. The density of the brise soleil is perceived differently from each angle of the pedestrian. The movement of the pedestrian in turn animates the brise soleil. The structural skin, together with the concrete core, forms the load bearing system. This minimizes the columns required, leaving us with open spaces to be separated as desired."

"The piazza has two main entrances, one from the north and one from the south both leading to the sunken main entrance of the building. We provide another secondary entrance from the rear of the building as a convenient access from the ground level. The lower main entrance on the basement level is 2 levels high and is not only visually but also physically connected to the secondary entrance above. It is an inviting gesture and the spaces created by this way allow the activity of the square to take place in the inside as well. Parking is provided under ground to serve not only the inhabitants of the building but the surrounding as well."
