Erick van Egeraat has won an international competition to design a national library in Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan

The 81.000 m2 building is designed as a covered extension of the city centre, with a multi-functional, 18 metre-high atrium that serves as a portal between the library and the city. "The building becomes part of the public domain," van Egeraat says, "a portal between the city and the library, a place where the collective and cultural qualities of downtown spaces are combined." The entrance space acts simultaneously as meeting point, boulevard, gallery, living room, garden and educational facility.

Sited on Tukay square on the South-Eastern edge of the city centre, the library will be embedded into a hill, continuing the shape of the landscape with the top of the building serving as a new park. Van Egeraat hopes that by linking the existing Hermitage Park, the new library park and the National Library to the adjacent Tukay square, the area will be transformed into a vibrant hub of Kazan city life.
Erick van Egeraat says he wants to "invite citizens to explore and experience knowledge. The building provides a home to all modern ways of accessing information, but its flexible setup allows for future forms of working with knowledge, too."

Colunas "á la" Frank Lloyd Wright... Sempre um bom efeito mas não percebo muito bem que relação têm com o resto do projecto. Parece um pouco que apareceram ali do nada.

Johnson Wax Administration com o conceito original um bocado distorcido... (a iluminaçao e SÓ no topo,nas paredes encontra-se o cheio/massa em vez das usuais aberturas/janelas)

Também me parece uma homenagem ao Wright muito forçada, ou uma adaptação pouco conseguida.

Olha que não sei... Dependendo para onde aquele lado do edificio está virado, aquelas colunas bem que podem fazer um sombra jeitosa.

Mas a escala esmagadora dos "cogumelos" não sei se será a mais acertada...

Sim, para as proporções se manterem provavelmente o topo dos cogumelos teria de ser mais largo. Não sei é se isso contribuiria positivamente para o projecto - é difícil de fazer qualquer juízo a esse respeito quando só se tem estes desenhos. Fica a curiosidade :p

O que eu acho interessante é que, se fossem umas banais colunas, de secção constante (que há em todo o lado), não haveria aqui pastiche, mas como são as inusitadas colunas cogumelo, então a referência é óbvia...nem acho que fica mal no projecto em questão.
