In Cube, a handful of strangers wake up to find themselves trapped in a bizarre, futuristic prison—a seemingly endless maze of rooms, each with hatch-like doors in the floor, ceiling, and each wall, giving onto an identical room, no matter which direction they choose. Among them is a criminal renown for his prison breaks. This seems like an uncanny stroke of good fortune. However, nothing in the Cube is what it seems. Not only do each of the prisoners have secrets, but some of the rooms in the Cube are rigged with lethal traps that kill in horrifically ingenius ways.
The prisoners soon decide that there is no help on its way to them, and that navigating their way through the Cube is their only hope for freedom. As the traps in various rooms claim their tolls, one of the prisoners discovers that each room in the Cube is marked by a unique series of numbers. Among the prisoners is a gifted math student who begins breaking down the predicament of the Cube into logical, mathemathically knowable perameters. These strange coordinates even appear to reveal what rooms are rigged with traps.
But there is no easy escape from the Cube, as tensions mount among the prisoners, desperation rising out of their fatigue, confusion, and lack of memories of how they came to be in the Cube. They struggled to work together as the clashes between their personalities become more heated and vicious.
This is one of the most innovative and interesting science fiction films I have ever seen. The predicament of the characters is utterly engrossing, their dialogue is real and laden with fascinating details about their personalities. It is a very cerebral film, though the director and writer seemed to know just how much mathematical theory the average viewer could tolerate, and remained well in bounds. Giving our hyper-security conscious society these days, and the fact of "enemy combatants" being held incommunicado, without trial, this story is all the more relevant and poignant.
