  11. Ghost Road - Fri, 09 Mar 2007 18:11:00 +0000 New Scientist reports that "lane markings on roads could one day be changed at the click of a mouse." If electronics firm Philips has its way, roadway markings will no longer use paint; instead, "ultrathin plastic strips would be attached to road surfaces." These would use "a hard-wearing version of the electronic ink used in emerging flexible displays for e-books" – transforming roads into a kind of literary hieroglyph, or infrastructural e-book. Paving the way for Da Vinci Code 2: Road to Calvary, in which a strange message is found encoded in the pavement outside Mel Gibson's Malibu home... More prosaically, this just means that "lane marking or speed limits [could] be changed at will." But whose will...? And does that mean that you could program the M25 to be like I-95 for a day, and vice versa? Exploring cultural exchange via roadway markings? Of course, if these programmable markings do become an everyday reality, it will inevitably mean that every fifteen year-old on the planet will waste hours and hours trying to hack the local roadways, engineering gruesome pile-ups. J.G. Ballard will be arrested, remote control in hand, staring glassy-eyed through a window at the final crashes he has staged. And, who knows, maybe somebody will figure out how to make these magic roadways show films. The face of Cary Grant, shining upward from a freeway in Montana. Earth Surface Television™. 13. Pré-fabricado - Triumph SmartSpace As you may have noticed, many of our recent prefab posts have been non-residential, from ProjectFrog’s modular classrooms, to Hotel Everland and Toby Long’s interview regarding the possibilities for prefab to expand into more commercial markets. We’re constantly impressed by the modern prefab houses being built, but also love to see prefab being applied to more public structures. New England-based modular building company Triumph’s SmartSpace design serves as a great example- and last December they successfully installed and opened their first prefab classroom in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The highly-innovative building system epitomizes prefab “speed, style, and sustainability,” can be adapted to virtually any site, and ready to inhabit in as little as 60 days. And if there was any question as to the green-ness of the structures, the SmartSpace website proudly lists their Top 10 Reasons SmartSpace is Green, which include everything from recycled carpet tiles and steel to daylighting and efficient HVAC systems. 14. Architectural Divorce Court - Fri, 09 Mar 2007 21:25:00 +0000 [image: From "Splitting," by Gordon Matta-Clark]. "A 43-year-old German decided to settle his imminent divorce by chainsawing a family home in two and making off with his half in a forklift truck," Reuters reports. The man then "picked up his half with the forklift truck and drove to his brother's house where he has since been staying." The police seem less than outraged. "The man said he was just taking his due," one of them stated. And you thought building a wall was a bad way to get divorced... (Via Archinect. 15. STEVEN HOLL Knut Hamsen Museum in Norway Like any good architect, Steven Holl finds inspiration in unexpected places. His award-winning Swiss residence was inspired by the black rocks and white snow of the Swiss Alps. And this project, a museum in Hamarøy, Norway, is inspired by the writing of Knut Hamsun, Norway’s most inventive 20th century writer. While the structure at first glance seems a bit austere, its design concept, described as “building as body,” is rich and poetic, serving as a narrative that “tells many contrasting tales and constantly revitalizes Hamsun’s writing.” The museum will include exhibition areas, a library, cafe and auditorium, topped off by a roof garden whose long grass reflects traditional Norwegian sod roof design. 20. Hangover House: Obscure Modern Masterpiece - Thu, 8 Mar 2007 10:08:00 GMT Few people know of one of the best modern houses in the United States, and even fewer have ever seen it. The designer of Richard Halliburtonâs house (1938) in Laguna Beach, William Alexander Levy, would never again produce such an exceptional building nor work for such an eccentric client. He met Paul Mooney in 1930 and the two men became lovers. By that time, Mooney had a prolific professional and personal relationship as editor and ghostwriter to Richard Halliburton, the world-traveling adventurer, who at the time was famous as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Alexander was only 27 years old when he received the commission for the Halliburton's house. Alexander drew upon European contemporary architecture and created flat-roofed boxes of concrete and glass in a clear expression of the International Style of modernism. He hoped to create a house that soared like the modern spirit of Halliburton. Mies van der Roheâs work and his experimental concrete buildings of the 1920s, along with Le Corbusierâs LâEsprit Nouveau Pavilion (1924-25) and his famous Villa Savoye (1928-29) would influence Alexander. In 1936, the first major and well-publicized concrete dams, Hoover Dam and Grand Coulee Dam were built, securing concrete as a practical and modern material in the United States. Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander's teacher, had used concrete at the Larkin Building (1904) and Unity Temple (1905-07), but Wright most exploited its structural characteristics in the cantilevered concrete decks at Fallingwater (1936-37). At the Halliburton House, simple rectangular boxes of reinforced, poured-in-place concrete define the house. The boxesâ two open sidesâfacing the ocean and the canyonâare filled with thin steel frames of industrial windows. Cantilevered concrete stairs wrap the exteriorâs southwest corner to the entry door. The interior contains a gallery, the living and dining rooms, a small kitchen, two bathrooms and three bedroomsâone each for Halliburton, Mooney, and Alexander. The roof is a deck with unobstructed views in all directions. Mooney named it âHangover Houseâ because of the dramatic setting overlooking the canyon. The words are impressed into the concrete retaining wall near the entry. The three men were aware of the obvious pun. Later, Alexander assisted Arnold Schoenberg, the composer, with the redesign of Schoenbergâs Brentwood studio. Alexander befriended Ayn Rand, and provided quotes for her book, The Fountainhead (1943). Some of Randâs descriptions in the book of the Heller House are thinly disguised references to the Halliburton House. Alexander continued to practice architecture and interior design and by 1950 had moved permanently to West Hollywood. He died in 1997. For more information see the book, Horizon Chasers: The Lives and Adventures of Richard Halliburton and Paul Mooney, by Gerry Max. Itâs the story of Halliburton, the quintessential world traveler of the 20th century and his gifted editor and ghost writer, Paul Mooney, with first hand accounts by William Alexander and others. The book is published by McFarland & Company, April 2007.
