The Wall Street Journal calls oil-rich Dubai a "playpen for architects" where big-name firms scramble to design eye-catching iconic buildings. The Burj Dubai, which is set for completion in 2008, is on the fast track to becoming the world's tallest building, with a spire that outpaces Taipei 101 in Taiwan by 200 meters.
On the drawing board is "The Burj," a one-kilometer skyscraper slated to rise even higher than Burj Dubai.
And then there are those truly eccentric structures like the proposed spinning hotel, a 312-meter high skyscraper with doughnut shaped floors that will rotate 360 degrees every 90 minutes. Architect David Fisher says the revolving building will have wind turbines and solar energy panels to generate its own power.
