British firm will design the Czech Republic’s most significant post-Communist building.

Future Systems has triumphed in the open international competition for a £50m extension to the Czech Republic's National Library in Prague.
The practice beat 354 other entries in one of the most hotly-contested competitions of the modern era, for which 760 architects registered (News August 4).
British duo Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke finished second, with Czech firm HSH Architekti taking third place.
The anonymous competition was judged by a jury including British-based architects Zaha Hadid and Eva Jiricna.

The brief was for a 50,000sq m building to house the library’s modern collections.
Future Systems’ design (pictured) resembles an artificial hill for the site in Letna Park in Prague’s Old Town, a World Heritage Site.
The design includes an observatory-style room at the top to offer spectacular views of landmarks such as Hradcany Castle.
The building, which the library authorities hope to open in 2011, will be the first building in the Czech Republic for Future Systems’ Czech-born co-director Jan Kaplicky.
