A new generation of care buildings for Glasgow City Council

The South West CHCP best exemplifies Gordon Murray & Alan Dunlop's methods of working; design and built form, developed from concept to completion through drawing and model making by the architect, in consultation with the client and project team. It will be the first of a new generation of care buildings for Glasgow City Council and will be delivered at Craigton Road for the Govan Community.
The building is designed to fully integrate with the surrounding landscape providing a range of public care services whilst accommodating both community and voluntary organisations. It sits deep routed in the existing landscape with its linear form addressing the M8 motorway to the South, whilst the roof form and end profile of the structural bays break down the mass and reduce the scale of building to more suitably fit the residential context of Craigton Road.
The building is organised around internal and external courtyards that allow connection back to natural light and air supporting strong sustainability credentials whilst the plan form is arranged as a sequence of spaces and thresholds, gradually becoming more private as you progress through the building.
The selection of materials, and in particular Corten steel cladding reflects the area's rich shipbuilding heritage. Aerofoil roofs, orientated to maximise ambient north light, are arranged in six bays providing a coherent rhythm and sensitivity to the architecture.
