Gareth Hoskins’ grand villa sticks out in conservation area

13 February 2009

Gareth Hoskins Architects has won planning permission for this 1,000sq m, six-bedroom private house in the Pollokshields conservation area of Glasgow.

The Lawlor House will stand on a steeply sloping plot in a garden suburb on the site of a former orchard.
The practice describes the design as “a contemporary interpretation of the grand villa, with sliding panels of buff sandstone, render and glass contained within a folding, precast concrete band.”
The three-storey house is arranged around private courtyards which step down to the front entrance.
The double-height reception area features a glazed lift and cantilevered staircases, while the master bedroom on the third floor is cantilvered over the entrance and drive area to maximise daylight into the room, and views out.

Project architect Alasdair Tooze said: “There were two criteria: to avoid overlooking, and the desire to get views. The building is dug into the slope on the ground floor, so it doesn’t pop up too high.
“The views from the master bedroom across to the hills are the cherry on top. The clients were quite clear — they wanted a large villa, but not a traditional shape with pitched roofs.”
The project, which is due to start on site in the summer, also boasts a fitness suite with pool, gym, sauna and steam room, an entertainment suite, and a fully glazed family living and dining area.
n An exhibition of Gareth Hoskins Architects work is being held at the RIBA London headquarters until February 24. The show marks the practice’s 10th anniversary. Details at http://tinyurl.com/ajq8qr
