Welcome to another edition of our ‘architecte de la semaine‘ series here at architecture.mnp - where we’re featuring the work of Kochi Architect’s Studio of Japan.

First up is HOUSE kn [2006] located in Kanagawa, Japan. A private residence is a suburban community in Japan, the house is amongst typical detached suburban structures - gardens in front, houses pushed back from the street. Step one in the design of the house was the creation of a large ‘box’ that inhabits the entire site - and then carving a void from this ‘box’ for the garden/yard space. The void then acts as a window for the house - framing the garden, the sky, and views out from the box.
