Henning Larsen Architects' new HQ for the Spiegel Media Group wins first prize win in an international competition

Henning Larsen Architects have designed the new headquarters for the Spiegel Media Group. They chose a two-part composition to create hierarchy and openness on the site as well as to embrace the complex urban spaces that meet at the Ericus Spitze. The two clearly readable figures at the same time provide each building a measured meaning and a significant value in relation to creating identity for all the surrounding public spaces. The Ericus Office will be essential for the completion of the large park space. Together the two volumes constitute a deep and open composition. Spiegel will naturally become the gateway to Hafencity seen from the railway station and Brooktorkai. The two buildings are designed as large U-forms that embrace the urban space they are directed towards. Spiegel embraces an internal space with a more urban character because it is directed at the city. The Ericus Office embraces an open, outdoor green area since it is directed towards the large open park. The two buildings form two plazas. An arrival plaza for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers towards Brooktorkai and one for staying at, which is protected against traffic and noise, with direct connection to the quay promenade towards the Ericus Spitze. The office buildings are designed as two light, white sails or curtains that in one movement encircle the building’s functions and contrast distinctly with the base. Their moving and lively expression is a play with inspiration from the softness from the ships, the white paper and the light.
