Launched for the first time last year, the Carbuncle Cup is to the Stirling Prize what the Golden Raspberries are to the Oscars. The shortlist, which also includes buildings by Stephen George and Partners, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Edward Potter Associates and East Riding Council Architects with Atkins, was chosen from a long-list of nominations by BD's readers. The winner will be announced on Friday October 5, a day before the Stirling Prize winner is revealed. BD’s web editor Zoë Blackler said: “While the current boom is producing a lot of great architecture, there’s also a huge amount of rubbish going up. The Carbuncle Cup draws attention to the worst offenders blighting our towns and cities, from high profile buildings like a new library extension, to student housing and a hotel."Click here to see details of all the shortlisted carbuncles. Firstly the Stirling prize is judged on aesthetics and form making and doesn't take into account how the building is used or how it stands upto everyday life. This is very clear in the many architectural photographs of prize winners devoid of any evidence of human existence. Secondly the Carbuncle Cup is likewise judged by the same parameters; aesthetics and form; i.e. so called 'beauty'. By all means campaign for better design and quality in the urban environment but does it really have to done by means of public and professional humiliation and judged by aesthetics alone? Roderic Bunn 2 October, 2007 Is the design quality assessment of these buildings purely a subjective process, or is there any empirical or quantitive basis to the criticism? They be offensive aesthetically, but the true crime comes in the degree of environmental damage they wreak. I can think of one Stirling Prize winner much loved by the architectural establishment, but horrible to work in, of questionnable build quality, and emitting more carbon dioxide than a small village. My vote goes to the building with all its lights on at 3 am. Check it out. You have my proxy vote. Kirsten Elliott 2 October, 2007 I'm sitting here agonising over this. This is a tough one. I've finally whittled it down to two - one for its sheer naffness and the other for its brutality and for recalling the worst of the fifties. I think you should have let people grade them - or at least explain their vote. Editor's comment We would love to know why you've voted the way you have. Please fill out the comment box at the bottom of the story on your chosen building. ZB Johann van Rensburg 2 October, 2007 Why are there no captions under the 7 pictures? Are we to guess which building is which? Or are we all supposed to know every building in the UK by sight? Even after clicking on the pictures it is impossible to tell which building is which. So a nice voting system ONLY for those in the know... J Editor's comment If you hover over a picture the name of the building will appear. You can also click on the link at the bottom of this story to visit our Carbuncle section where you'll find an individual story on each of the shortlisted buidlings. ZB Simon Fisher 2 October, 2007 There all awful but Sydec Apartments gets my vote. Norman Foster should change his detail bookas they all look the same, where's the imagination? treasure House should lose the mushroom hat and it woudl look much better. Sydec though is definately the worst in my opinion. Fonte: bdonline Quote
