DLR Architects and Morphosis complete the Wayne L. Morse United States Courthouse

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently awarded DLR Group and Morphosis a citation for the design of the Wayne L. Morse United States Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon. The AIA will include the U.S. Courthouse in its annual publication of the AIA’s Committee on Architecture for Justice (CAJ) Justice Facilities Review 2007-2008, which will be published in September. A citation from the AIA, Committee on Architecture for Justice recognizes outstanding projects from among hundreds of justice facility designs around the United States. Only seven projects received citations this year. The jury consisted of architects and administrators familiar with justice facilities. Architects Morphosis and DLR Group focused on a design aiming to redefine the architectural values embodied in the Federal Judicial Branch. The Wayne L. Morse US Courthouse represents a new generation of federal courthouses, providing a welcoming and accessible public environment within a secure government building. The 270,000-SF courthouse includes six courtrooms, associated chambers and ancillary spaces. The first two floors above grade are composed of a glass-clad structure containing administrative offices that support the functions of the courthouse above. This portion of the building provides a plinth for the upper floors formed by three individual buildings, or pavilions. Each steel-skinned pavilion houses a pair of courtrooms and their respective chambers and support spaces.
