Europan creates opportunities for young architects - in the Netherlands and abroad, it mobilises ideas, solutions, approaches and designs and contributes to the debate on architecture and urban design at a local, national and international level. In a collaboration of, on average, twenty European countries, Europan organises a competition once every two years in the field of architecture and urban design. Landscape aspects also play an increasing role in the assignments submitted. Europan invites young architects to come up with solutions for real sites, made available by clients and municipalities. The competition is organised according to the same rules in all countries. In each country a national jury adjudicates the entries for the sites in the country in question. Theme Commencing with Europan 8 the principle of one theme per competition round has been abandoned. The theme for the coming rounds is "European Urbanity". During past competition rounds it emerged that, although the typologies of the European towns and cities are in strong contrast, they face similar problems. Briefly formulated, this relates to "urbanity", the urbanisation of the town/city. In each round the problems of the participating sites will be analysed, links sought and the sites divided into thematic families. Publication As with each round of the competition, a book about Europan 8 is being published containing the results of the competition. The sites, the prize-winning plans, the special mentions and the plans selected for the Towns & Juries Forum in Sintra are described and illustrated in the publication. It also contains interviews with the winners in which they explain their designs and backgrounds. Hans Ibelings, founder and editor-in-chief of A10 Magazine, analyses the entries from a European perspective. The publication is also accompanied by a CD-ROM with the work of all the Europan 8 participants. "Europan 8 - European Urbanity and Strategic Projects" - is published by NAi Uitgevers. The book will be presented during the Dutch Europan 8 award ceremony on 29 June 2006 in Dordrecht, where it will also be on sale through NAi Booksellers.
