Robert Harbison discusses the joys of the "labyrinthine" city in this article from MSN Open for Design.

"The cities that interest me most are the ones hardest to reduce to patterns of lines, labyrinthine ones like Istanbul or Venice... One of the pleasures of the labyrinth is that it is not really solvable, but full of little resting places that constitute complete worlds."
