University of British Columbia expanded with $90m Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Saucier + Perrotte and Hughes Condon Marler Architects are currently designing the new building for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences / CDRD for the University of British Columbia. The project site is located at the intersection of Westbrook Mall and Agronomy Road, a 20,240 sq m parcel of land that is located at an important university entry point. For the University, the design needed to reflect the Pharmaceutical Science's world-class researchers, faculty, and the University's status as an internationally recognised institution in scientific endeavours.
With this in mind, the building has been designed to act as a gateway to the southeast edge of the campus, engaging in the community with a ground floor that will be open, transparent, inviting, and one that will showcase the public function.
The $90m facility aims to create spaces for the exchange of ideas; for intellectual and social interaction. It is set to promote creativity and foster new methods for collaboration and individual study and experiments. The new building will also house the university's Centre for Drug research and development in a state of the art facility. Just as it hopes to become a vibrant node of science and technology, the building design has taken into consideration the current and future needs of the University's Pharmaceutical programme. In this way, the exchange of knowledge in all its forms is really the principal notion behind the new building and is the catalyst for its unique architectural form.
