Restello project in Kolkata uses high grade steel in response to high moisture climate UK architects Piercy Conner are ready to go to market with their ‘Restello’ project in Kolkata, India. Working in collaboration with engineering firm Price & Myers, Conner’s design consists of twelve luxury apartments, using steel as their base material. Having won the Living Steel International Architecture Competition in 2006, the project aims to incorporate elements of both traditional Eastern architecture and innovative sustainable practices. The double layered outer ‘skin’ of the building consists of one permeable outer layer of perforated steel screens and one inner layer of floor to ceiling glazing. Along the front of the apartments and between these two layers lies the additional feature of double storey terracing. Piercy Conner’s choice of steel as the main building material has multiple positive qualities. In the high moisture content of the Kolkata climate, the steel is not expected to shrink or swell over time, but is set to act as an effective barrier to both sun and rain, maximising natural light and maintaining external views. In using steel to construct the Restello project, Piercy Conner hope to save the new homeowners time, energy and money when it comes to long term maintenance. The steel used is of a high grade and is manufactured to international standards with Tata Bluescope Steel and Tata Steel. Galvanised and painted steels were chosen in an attempt to protect against corrosion and to elongate the lifetime of the apartments.
