Erick van Egeraat’s recently compleated office tower is one part of the mixed use high-rise urban development Zuid-As, located to the south of Amsterdam’s city centre.

The office tower has been designed with a ’stacked block’ structure. Composed of a variety of shifted, light weight volumes, the aesthetic appearance achieved is one of ‘heavy materialisation’.

The architects intention was to use the shifted volumes to create an expressive building, which appears different from every angle.

The building is composed of three distinct sections, each constructed from separate materials to create their own character.

The lower floors are transparent allowing natural light to travel deep into the core of the building. In contrast, the upper floors are clad in a heavy natural stone, punctuated with a variety of different shaped openings.

The upper and lower sections are connected by a third zone clad in a matrix of transparent and printed glass and aluminium panels, with the aim to form a subtle transition between upper and lower floors.
