Mikou's competition winning Dunkirk theatre

5 January, 2010

By Anna Winston

Paris-based practice Mikou Design Studio has revealed images of its competition winning design for a £13.4 million theatre renovation project in Dunkirk.

The 4500 sq m Bateau Feu theatre, designed by former Ateliers Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano Workshop architects Salwa and Selma Mikous, will include a concert hall, a black box theatre space, rehearsal hall, dressing rooms, storage space and offices.

It will also serve as a civic building with a foyer, café, bar, gift shop and a new public square outside the building.

Spaces within the structure have been arranged according to volume allowing the perforated metal clad building to step down in four stages to a square at the front of the site
On the western façade, which overlooks housing and garden spaces, the architects have added an anthracite block of the same scale as the adjacent housing to the side of the building to help create a “visual distance” between the two developments.
