Danish practice 3XN has beaten three other shortlisted teams to win a competition to design an addition to the neo-classical Frederiksberg Courthouse in Frederiksberg, Denmark.

The practice’s proposal, which beat schemes by Arkitektfirmaet Kjær & Richter, Arkitema, Dissing & Weitling and Henning Larsen, features a small atrium cut through the middle of the building to draw light in and create an open space connecting the various spaces within the structure.

“The form of the structure is both classic and dynamic – standing as a modern interpretation of the classical saddle style roof,” said a spokeswoman for the practice.
The scheme is due to be completed on site during the first half of 2012.
