The Kräfta scheme is awarded first prize and recommended for realisation by virtue of the beautifully simple solution which at the same time offers exceptional spatial qualities. Kräfta is an obvious winner, with a convincingly simple manner which discreetly fits in with the context, in terms of material and scale, and at the same time achieves both beauty and absolute originality in its creation of a building with a dramatic expression all its own. Sundsvall will acquire the signature building called for in the competition brief.
The project has a robust, simple structure which is judged capable of coping with a thorough development process without losing its basic qualities.
Fundamentally, this project is a simple cube shape on the scale of the Stone Town, cut up into smaller volumes to create an open, communal foyer in the middle of it. This room is very dramatic and beautiful in shape, with open light slits as a foil to the solid volumes of the buildings. The focus of attention in this public building is clearly on the public. Both the piazza outside and the public inner space can be used for many different arrangements and activities. The building can be kept open frequently and people will be able to walk through it without any particular reason. The public can look out over the city and landscape from foyer and roof terraces, at the same time as residents will be attracted by the activity discernible inside the building. Like a city precinct, the scheme has no backs, which is a very important quality of this project. The entrance façade in the west, facing the new piazza, is articulated solely by means of a slightly greater distance between the closed volumes. The new piazza on the sheltered western side is judiciously proportioned. The restaurant is also sited on the western side, with an outdoor cafeteria basking in the evening sunlight.
This project is almost completely detached from Kulturmagasinet, and can thus be suitably scaled and given a character of its own. Thanks to the slight displacement in relation to the gridiron layout of the Stone Town, no crannies will be created or dead ends experienced between the new building and Kulturmagasinet, even though the two are relatively close together. At the same time, the functional connection between Kulturmagasinet and the arts centre and theatre needs to be developed and opened up in the ongoing process, in order to clarify the connections and improve the potential efficiency of activities.
The brief is accomplished within the proposed volume, but certain functions need to be developed in order to achieve better functionality, especially as regards goods reception, the backstage area, workshops and other working facilities, which have been given dark locations on the basement storey. The building could do with being elevated slightly so as to admit daylight to working premises and dispense with costly foundation work. The materials and technical solutions chosen for the project also need to be reviewed in the ongoing process. Given the structure and powerful form of the project, changes in a dialogue with the users are judged to be perfectly possible.

This scheme presents a very well-organised centre for theatre and the arts, powerfully linked with Kulturmagasinet, and with all functions accommodated beneath a roof deck which looks more like a landscape than a building. It is a signature building which, with its sloping level and an uprising stage section, presents a magnificent front towards the bay, while at the same time responding to the entrance piazza with a plain glass front.
The building has the form of a sculpturally composed landscape, with a large stone-clad roof deck sloping towards the sea. This imparts character to the building and at the same time gives the people of Sundsvall an exciting place to frequent, with a glorious view of the bay.
This project is entered from the piazza on the west side. However, its relatively low scale involves considerable spread at ground level, with the result that people wishing to get round the building will find themselves in for a long walk. The building's relation to the E4 highway feels unclear and does not support future development towards a boulevard in keeping with the city's vision.
The building is firmly organised. The big foyer is an open, accessible room which has been confidently divided up into smaller spatialities. Activities for children and youngsters are accommodated in small rooms borne up on pillars and thus occupy a central, significant position in the building. In other ways, though, this solution presents problems: the elevated facilities are more difficult for the public and staff to get to, and it seems hard to meet evacuation requirements without making big changes to the scheme. In addition, the basic idea of a sea view looking east seems rather undigested, and the exhibition gallery next to the stage unit is somewhat inaccessible and sidelined. For all its great qualities, this scheme entails a number of difficulties and uncertainties which the Jury believes may be hard to overcome.

The main quality of this project consists in an articulate approach to urban planning. The terminal point of the Stone Town has been defined by means of a park on a partly artificial peninsula outside its boundary. This is the most powerfully articulate of the projects choosing to create a building in clear contrast to the Stone Town.
The arts centre and theatre is naturally sited in a park on the peninsula. The building has a character all of its own, with softly bulging, glimmering façades, like a huge illuminated sculpture in clear contrast to the Stone Town's concrete materials and regular geometry.
The strong idea and pursuit of form, however, have proved detrimental to the arts centre and theatre in a number of respects. Because of the tall, compact shape, the theatre premises have to be stacked on top of each other, which makes for unpractical logistics indoors. The foyers running round the outside of the building on many storeys are sometimes cramped and often perplexing. The link to Kulturmagasinet occupies a secondary position one floor up, via the restaurant, which has been positioned with a view of the bay but without any patio access.
The entrant has not complied with the brief's desideratum of developing the E4 highway into a boulevard with urban qualities. Instead, in keeping with the idea of a separate peninsula with a retracted shoreline, the E4 is carried on a bridge over and past the competition site. The main entrance has been placed in the east, while the western side of the building has only been allotted a subordinate entrance function with a small piazza formation.

The grandly dramatic, elongated shape of Dramastaden recalls piles of timber or ice formations. This shape clashes with the typology of the Stone Town, while at the same time interacting with Kulturmagasinet and the Stone Town itself. The roof is crinkled, imparting distinctive shapes to the building. The east façade resembles stage curtains. This project has several spatial qualities, among them the competition's loveliest theatre auditorium, which is both stately and intimate.
Insightful organisation of the theatre's functions notwithstanding, the choice of a long, narrow building at a great distance from Kulturmagasinet entails many functional difficulties and long lines of communication which can hardly be said to meet the desideratum of integration with Kulturmagasinet. The outward design goes in one direction, the interior design in another, which generates both geometric and structural problems. The Jury is also critical of the cramped goods reception area overlooking the Selångersån river, and of the positioning of the restaurant beneath the E4 highway and so close to it.
The long south-facing piazza is a good shape and could become a fantastic piazza for the city, but the absence of eastern and western end points will make it windy and desolate for much of the year.
