3CPO Posted October 19, 2007 Report Posted October 19, 2007 Chipperfield gives Turner gallery new impression http-~~-//img135.imageshack.us/img135/4920/chipperfieldmargatea907sz2.jpg This year’s Stirling prizewinner David Chipperfield has revealed a radical redesign of his Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate, Kent. The new proposal uses six rectangular interlocking forms, with a roofline that reflects more closely the seaside town’s existing architecture, and provides panoramic views. The building, to be clad in opaque white glass, will sit on a plinth and has been reduced to two storeys. It includes a double-height gallery space for new commissions, a ground floor event space with external terrace, first floor gallery spaces and a cantilevered balcony. The changes follow discussions with Kent County Council, the gallery, and the public. Chipperfield said: “We have developed the design following the public meeting in June to take maximum advantage of such a dramatic setting with its extraordinary views. “Our building will look out to the sea, connect to the town and capture the same unique light that inspired Turner.” Fonte: BdOnline Quote
