XXXXX
Collaborative group chosen for towering expansion to University of Copenhagen CF Moller Architects, working with SLA and Ramboll have won an international competition for a key extension project to the University of Copenhagen's Panum complex. Not only will the expansion afford more space to students enrolled at the campus, but it will form a strong focus point and fresh identity for the university as a whole. A central tower block rises 16 storeys over a collection of smaller buildings at its base, adding a recognisable feature to the existing institution. The ground floor of this tower will be transparent to facilitate an easy interaction between the university and the local community of Copenhagen. This new relationship will be nurtured further by a public gallery at the top of the tower, where members of the community can congregate in a cafe and lounge, and take in views of the city from a variety of viewing platforms. C.F. Møller partners Mads Mandrup and Mads Møller explain: "It has been essential for us to create a building that will be in dialogue with the district of Nørrebro. Until now, the Panum building has had the air of a large, closed-off research institution with its back turned to the city. But now, through the new extension and its link with the existing Panum complex, we will be able to open up its inner universe of dynamic and exciting research to the outside world." Nestled between the lower level buildings will be a series of plazas, interspersed with internal garden spaces. Each of these green areas will feature intimate alcoves and seating, offering a quiet alternative to the traditional study rooms and offices. Spread throughout the interior of the new buildings will be auditoriums, classrooms, a canteen, a show lab, conference rooms and a book café, offset by an extensive science plaza.
